This might seem like a good idea, but our experience has shown that it's not feasible for a site like JackinWorld. Moderating a chat room or message board, and monitoring what people are doing there (or even keeping track of volunteer moderators), would probably take more time than we spend on the rest of the site — which is a lot — and it could easily spiral out of control. Even the JackInsider message board, which is limited to paying members (a small fraction of the overall JackinWorld readership), sometimes breaks out with flames, accusations, and other disrespectful behavior. There are also many technical issues in making such communication systems accessible by everyone, with all their different platforms and browsers — and helping out people who are having trouble. So we've made the decision to not have any real-time communication on the free JackinWorld site. We're sorry, but if you want to chat or leave real-time messages with people, you'll have to do it either on JackInsider or somewhere else. Would you link to my page? We're very particular about where we link to. Unless you have a professional-quality page that would be of clear value to readers, fits into one of the JackinLinks categories, and meets certain standards of decency and responsibility, we'll probably decline. Also, by policy, we don't link to pages that in turn provide a path to other sites that don't meet our standards. How can I take part in your next Survey? Can you tell me when you're going to have one? We don't keep a mailing list or anything, so you just have to visit JackinWorld often to find out if a Survey is happening. When we're planning a Survey, we usually give readers at least a few days' notice. I'd like to help out with the writing/programming/question answering of JackinWorld. Do you need any help? Not at the moment — but feel free to let us know if you're interested in doing something, and we'll keep you in mind for future projects. We do occasionally hire freelance writers, so if you're an experienced writer and you have an idea for an article or something, write to us and tell us about your idea, and we'll let you know if we're interested. What is your language policy, and why do you have it? Except in places where we're defining what slang terms mean, JackinWorld doesn't post language that is considered vulgar. We do this (1) to maintain a mature, responsible tone throughout the site, which we consider important, and (2) to keep the site from degenerating into nothing more than a source of titillation and mild smut. Since a lot of teens visit JackinWorld, we want parents to feel it's safe for their kids to be here. If they dialed up JackinWorld and were greeted by a bunch of four-letter words, their opinion of the site would be immediately tarnished. The basic rule of thumb we use is that if network TV censors in the U.S. would "bleep" a word or phrase, then we don't use the word or phrase on the site. For instance, we've heard the term "wank" on a network TV show, so that one is okay. Most other common slang terms for masturbation, however, are not. When in doubt, use the same terms you'd use when speaking to a doctor or health teacher. It's mostly a matter of common sense. How do we justify this policy considering the site is called "JackinWorld"? Well, a censor probably would not bleep "JackinWorld" if someone said it on TV. The name is abstract; it doesn't specifically mean anything. Why don't we call it something like MasturbationWorld? Because we like "JackinWorld" — it's a little edgy, it's memorable, and it's been around for years. When are you going to update the site? It's been the same forever. Do you send me anything by regular mail? Absolutely not. We don't keep any records of home addresses. We do ask for an e-mail address so we can send you your username and password. We won't send you any e-mail other than this (even to tell you your membership is about to expire), and we won't give out your e-mail address to anyone. Actually, JackinWorld did accept PayPal for a couple of years, and we had deals with a couple of other credit-card billing companies before and after that. But the story of JackinWorld and credit cards is long and arduous. Because our content places us somewhere in between Mom & Pop's Recipes and Hardcore Porn R Us, we've had a lot of trouble getting cooperation from companies who don't know how to categorize us. And because our site includes thousands of responses from people under 18 talking about sexuality, most other businesses won't touch us with a 10-foot pole. There's nothing illegal or improper about what we do, but nervous corporate America would rather just turn us away than work with us. As for PayPal, after eBay bought them out, in 2004 PayPal changed its "acceptible use policy" to forbid use on any website that includes "Representations or descriptions of intercourse, masturbation, excretory functions, or lewd exhibition of the genitals." Obviously, "descriptions of masturbation" includes JackinWorld. So, without notice, PayPal closed our account, held our remaining funds for 6 months without interest, and permanently banned me, as the guy who runs JackinWorld, from opening another PayPal account, even for personal use. I'm not sure if I want a full membership — can I get a trial membership? Sorry, we don't offer trial memberships. Why are you charging money for information that should be free? First of all, the most important information on JackinWorld — including all of the information on how to masturbate and why it's safe and healthy — is free. As for why we have a separate "pay" site, the answer is simple: It costs money to keep JackinWorld on the Web. Yes, we know, there are plenty of free Web-hosting services out there. But first, understand that every one of these would kick JackinWorld off their server in a New York minute as soon as they saw how much traffic the site generates — literally millions of hits per week. (In fact, before our current host, two different ISPs that we paid for Web hosting did just this, because we simply generated too much traffic.) Or perhaps, to pay for all the traffic, there would have to be three pop-up ads for every page you visit. That's not the kind of experience we want our vistors to have. Besides, being hosted professionally gives us much more control and flexibility in how we run the site. Believe me when I say that if it weren't for the revenue JackInsider generates, JackinWorld — and I mean the whole site — would have been off the Web years ago. I don't live in the U.S. How can I join? Your best bet would be to go to a local bank, buy a $10 or $20 U.S. bill with your own currency, and join by mail order. Please note that to ensure your privacy and to avoid sending out unsolicited e-mails, we will not notify you when your membership is about to expire. If you bought a 12-month membership more than a year ago and you can't get in, it's because your membership has expired. If you'd like to renew, go here. If your membership hasn't expired, go here to use our self-help function. Just type in the e-mail address that's on your JackInsider membership record, and your JackInsider login combination will be sent to you instantly. This combination should get you into JackInsider (but not the message board — that's a separate combination). I've lost my password and my e-mail address has changed, so I can't get my password sent to me — what do I do? Send us an e-mail. Tell us your old e-mail address, and if you have it, your Member ID number. We'll have to do some digging, and we'll have to confirm that your old mailbox is closed. If you can't wait, please sign up again from scratch. I can't sign in to the message boards — why not? First of all, have you registered for the message board? Signing up for a JackInsider membership does not automatically create your identity on the message board. You have to register for the message board separately (it's free for members). You can register for the board using your JackInsider Member ID number and password, your JackInsider handle and password (you might find this method less confusing), or an entirely different combination. But even if you use the same combination, you have to sign in to the message board after you log in to JackInsider. Whether you're registering for the first time or returning, it's a separate process: You get into JackInsider, then you sign in to the message board, if you wish to do so. You do not need to sign in to the board to read messages, but you do need to sign in to reply to messages, form your own topics, or edit your previous postings. After you register for the board, you should receive an automated e-mail with a link that you need to click on in order to activate your registration. This is necessary to validate the e-mail address of each member who registers. If you can remember your message-board username but not your password, retrieve your message board password by following these steps: Log into JackInsider, and then go here; click on "log in" at the top of the message board window, and then click on "I forgot my password." If you don't remember the message-board username that you chose, you'll have to re-register for the board using a new username. Please note that message-board usernames are case-sensitive. If you chose the username george, you won't be able to sign in using the name George, with a capital "G." I have trouble remembering the login combination you assigned me — can I set my own username and password? Yes. Just log into JackInsider using your Member ID number and your password, and then look for the link at the top of the page for changing your password. That link will also allow you to set a "handle," which you'll then be able to use instead of your Member ID number to get into JackInsider. And of course, you can also change your password on that same page. (To avoid confusion, we recommend that your JackInsider handle be the same as your message board username, if you have one.) How do I cancel my JackInsider membership? I don't want my credit card charged again. You don't need to do anything. JackInsider memberships cancel themselves when they expire. Unlike porno sites, we don't do automatic credit-card rebilling. We believe a credit card should be charged only at the time someone wants to buy something. Sure, we'd make a lot more money if we did it the way everyone else did it. But we do what we believe is right. How can I find out when my membership will expire, so I can renew and keep it active?
