great technique, I stated with a hole but suction too much so I cut two slits with a knife at 90 degrees into the melons 'love tunnel' still great suction. I prefer to use a refrigerated melon. As far as cutting a small hole in the opposite end to reduce suction, why bother? Isn't suction what it is all about? I scoop out the seeds with an ice tea spoon. Then I carefully enlarge the hole, a very small amount at a time.
